E-invoicing rules for French tutors in 2026

E-invoicing becomes mandatory in France. Here are the 2026 and 2027 dates, what really applies to tutors who bill families, and how to get ready in time.

E-invoicing is the obligation for French businesses to issue, send and receive their invoices in a structured digital format that passes through a platform approved by the tax authority. A PDF emailed to another business will no longer be enough. If you teach private lessons, the real question is not whether the reform applies to you, but which part applies, and from when.

Two dates that matter

The reform arrives in two stages, and both matter for a self-employed tutor.

  • 1 September 2026: every business, including micro-entrepreneurs under the VAT exemption (franchise en base), must be able to receive an electronic invoice. In practice, you need to be registered on a platform that can accept those invoices on your behalf.
  • 1 September 2027: micro-businesses and very small companies must in turn issue their invoices in a structured format and report certain sales data to the administration, a process called e-reporting.
The date that catches most tutors off guard is 2026. Even if you send no electronic invoice until 2027, you already have to be able to receive one from September 2026.

Mostly billing families? What really applies to you

Most tutors invoice individuals: a student's parents, or an adult student directly. Sales to a private individual (the "B2C" case) stay outside e-invoicing in the strict sense. You will keep handing a family a normal invoice, on paper or as a PDF. Two obligations still reach you.

Receiving: from September 2026

You pay for software subscriptions, teaching materials, perhaps a coworking desk. Your business suppliers will switch to electronic invoices and send them in that format. To receive them, you choose a platform and get identified there by your SIREN number. This is the only step that is genuinely mandatory on 1 September 2026, and it takes a few minutes.

Reporting your sales data: e-reporting

From 2027, because you fall within the scope of VAT (which is true even under the franchise en base exemption), the data from your sales to individuals will need to reach the administration through your platform. You do not change how you bill a family: the platform passes on the amounts, not you.

Billing an organization: structured format in 2027

If you invoice a school, an association, or a company paying for lessons for its staff, that is a "B2B" transaction. From September 2027, that invoice will have to leave in a structured format (Factur-X, UBL or CII) through a platform, no longer as a PDF by email. The usual invoicing rules do not change: mandatory details, continuous numbering, and keeping copies on file.

Choosing a platform

The heart of the reform is the partner dematerialization platform, often shortened to PDP: a private operator registered by the state that sends, receives and converts your invoices. You pick one, much as you would pick a business bank. Three things deserve a look:

  • the official registration, whose list is published on impots.gouv.fr and updated regularly;
  • the monthly cost, often a few euros for a solo tutor;
  • how well it connects to the tool that already produces your quotes and invoices.

If you run your lessons and your billing in one place, check that the tool will connect to a platform when the time comes. A billing tool built for tutors saves you from re-entering your students and amounts into a separate service.

Getting ready without rushing

There is time, and the steps are light for a tutor working alone.

  1. Check that your SIREN number and contact details are current in the business register.
  2. By the summer of 2026, choose a platform and open your account so you can receive invoices.
  3. Start now with clean, continuous invoice numbering: that is what the platform will pick up.
  4. If you bill companies, plan the move to a structured format for 2027.

Clear numbering, correct amounts, well-identified students: that is already 80% of the work. A tool that keeps students, lessons and payments together makes the transition almost invisible, because your invoices are already ready to travel through the right platform.
