Student Tutors in France: Which Status?
Student giving private lessons in France: Cesu employee or micro-entrepreneur? Tax exemption, the 83,600 € ceiling and the effect on your grant.

A student who gives private lessons in France has to pick a status: an employee of the family through the Cesu, or a micro-entrepreneur. The right choice depends on the hours, where the lessons happen, and the effect on income tax and any scholarship.
Two statuses, two logics
Paid tutoring is a declared activity, even for a few hours a week. A student is allowed to do it: no diploma is required, and no age limit beyond legal adulthood. Two frameworks exist.
- Employee of the family, paid through the Cesu déclaratif. The family is the employer; the student receives a net salary and a payslip.
- Micro-entrepreneur (micro-BNC). The student invoices families directly and reports turnover to URSSAF.
The first suits regular lessons at the pupil's home. The second gives more freedom: online lessons, lessons at your place, several families, lead platforms.
Being an employee through the Cesu
The Cesu déclaratif lets a private individual employ someone for a home service, including private tutoring at the pupil's home. The family opens an employer account, declares the hours and net pay each month, and URSSAF works out the contributions and issues the payslip.
For the student this is the lightest setup: no registration, no bookkeeping. You receive a salary, nothing more. On the family's side, lessons given at the pupil's home qualify for a home-services tax credit; online lessons or lessons at the tutor's place do not. For how the scheme works, see How CESU Payments Work for Private Tutoring.
Becoming a micro-entrepreneur
A student can also set up a micro-entreprise. Private lessons fall under non-commercial profits (BNC). The micro regime stays open as long as turnover does not pass 83,600 € a year: that is the ceiling in force for 2026, measured against the turnover of 2025 or 2024. No student will cross it with a few hours of lessons, and you only leave the regime after two consecutive years above the threshold.
In practice, the student:
- registers online as an auto-entrepreneur;
- issues an invoice to each family;
- keeps an income ledger (livre des recettes);
- reports turnover and pays contributions to URSSAF, monthly or quarterly.
It is more paperwork than the Cesu, but the student is independent: they set their own rates, take on as many families as they want, and can answer requests from platforms such as Superprof. To get started, see Registering as a self-employed tutor in France.

Try it freeIncome tax: what changes
The status changes how the income is taxed.
Salaries from a student job carry an income-tax exemption. For a student aged 25 or under on 1 January, salaries earned during studies are exempt up to three times the monthly SMIC, that is 5,405 € for 2025 income (on request; only the part above is taxable). A salary paid through the Cesu falls within this exemption.
The exemption covers salaries. A micro-entrepreneur's receipts are BNC, not a salary: they do not qualify for the student-job exemption and add to taxable income.
So for a student teaching a few hours at a family's home, the Cesu is often lighter on tax.
Scholarships and aid: the household effect
One point not to overlook: the means-tested scholarship is calculated on the gross overall income (revenu brut global) shown on the tax notice of the household the student is attached to, taken from year N-2 (2024 income for the 2026-2027 year).
As long as the student stays attached to their parents' household, their own income, salary or BNC alike, counts in that gross overall income and can move the scholarship bracket. A tax-exempt salary is still income for the scholarship: measure the effect before adding hours.
How to choose in practice
- A few hours a week, always at the pupil's home: the Cesu is enough and stays the simplest.
- Online lessons, lessons at your place, or several families: the micro-entreprise is the way.
- On a scholarship: check the household effect before committing to a set number of hours.
